Just how much do storms like this cost McHenry County every year?
FEMA designed and built the interactive National Risk Index to assess the risk for 18 natural hazards across communities. The index says McHenry County has a relatively high risk for lightning, strong winds and tornadoes.
During the years measured (1986-2019), there were 15 tornadoes—about one every three years. While lightning events caused far fewer damage (in terms of annual loss), there were more than 55 of them per year on average.
Overall, storms that include lightning, strong winds or tornadoes cost McHenry County an average of $8,195,069 a year.
